About the Whyalla Road Safety Centre

Our Aim at Whyalla Road Safety Centre is to ensure that as many children as possible are educated on the road rules, the correct use of bicycles and riding techniques.

These skills will take the child through life when the transition from bike riding to driving a vehicle takes place.

Our Team of Volunteers

Bet Henderson

“I joined the committee in order to hopefully help prevent the closure of an icon of the Whyalla community.

My connection with the centre goes back some twenty years during my working career, at that time I saw the value it provided to the children of Whyalla. Now we see those children returning with their children.

I believe we now provide a venue where children safely learn bike and road safety, can enjoy a facility for their birthdays and a community space which both children and their parents can use at any time other than when booked for scheduled events.”

Ann Yates

“As a child I attended the centre and believe it is a great opportunity for children to learn how to ride correctly and eventually drive safely on our roads.

I joined the volunteers at the Whyalla Road Safety Centre to help start the committee who have enabled the centre to grow and become an important part of the Whyalla community.

I believe that If we can teach children road rules at a young age, then they will have this very important life skill for the future.

I look forward to seeing my girls enjoy the centre like I did as a child.”

John Baggs

“I decided to join Whyalla Road Safety Centre to assist with the teaching of young children in the basic road rules.

My own Grandchildren have had a lot of pleasure and learning from the centre.

Since I am now retired I find I have the time to volunteer and assist in the road safety education of other children.

To me it is a facility that this city should be proud of and strive to maintain.”

Allan Smith

“When I retired, I decided to do more volunteer work to give back to the Whyalla Community.

The Whyalla Road Safety Centre Inc is an ideal place to volunteer because you are working with school children teaching and demonstrating road safety techniques.

I have been involved with the Centre since 2011 as a Committee Member, Trainer, Secretary and currently the Treasurer.”

Damien Trenwith

“I have fond memories of growing up and learning to ride at The Whyalla Road Safety Centre.

I have always seen the need for this programme for Whyalla’s young kids and wanted to assist with the running of the centre.

I Joined the committee as I could see the need for the programme for Whyalla’s young kids. Being involved in the running of the centre allows me to show the community the benefits and the value of the centre.

Mark Leddington
Mark is our bike mechanic.

Mark has a long history with cycling, a former member of Whyalla Cycling Club and then completed training as a bike mechanic with various bike shops in Whyalla.

Not only is he a painter but he was instrumental in installing a “Street Library” with a section for children’s books as well catering for the older people in the area.

He is also responsible for the Bike Seat often used for photo opportunities at birthday parties.

Janice Baird
Janice has a history of working with people with disabilities, a great attribute to the centre, a great fundraising ideas and a hard worker.

Elizabeth Jones

As a teacher, I was aware of the Whyalla Road Safety Centre and often took classes there for an excursion/lesson.

Upon, retiring, and two vehicle accidents that involved grown up students, one of which died, made me aware of the need to educate children more thoroughly in road safety rule.

As a member a local aqua exercise group I met Bet Henderson an mentioned my concerns and she invited me to attend meetings and lessons/ I volunteered to become the secretary’s there was a need and was voted into that position at the next AGM.

I love being able to use my admin. Skills to upgrade the administration area of the Centre and help with classes. It is a great group of people who work well together, and I encourage others to join us.
